My Giro d'Italia Inspired Tote

Hello there
I hope you are having a good week. Here on the Causeway Coast there are great preparations afoot for the Giro d'Italia (which, believe it or not, is the worlds second largest cycle race) which starts here tomorrow. The route will pass about half a mile from our house & will follow the coastline through Northern Ireland
Inspired by all the cyclists & bikes appearing everywhere, I sat down & stitched this....
I used some lovely grey linen & wee scraps for the applique. The bag has a drawstring closure & plenty of room inside for lots of bits & pieces
I love the coral & blue fabrics with the grey linen. I used an air-erasable marker to just draw the bike outline onto the linen & then I stitched over it using brown thread, adding a wee bit of applique for the bike and the books.

I'm off now to get ready for the race (viewing I hasten to add!!!) - good luck to all of you cyclists, especially my wee brother!
Whether you're doing something sporty, or something more relaxing, I hope you have a lovely weekend & I'll be back next week with something special I've been planning for you :)
Enjoy the ride!

Lovely Liberty

Hello there!
I hope you have had a great week....the weekend will soon be here & hopefully you will get a wee bit of stitching squeezed in somewhere along the way! My week has gone by in a haze of dentist visits, painkillers & smoothies...yes, my mouth is now full of somewhat unsightly pieces of metal... At my age I know you'd think I would have more sense, but I am very self conscious about my teeth  (actually about my face in general to be honest) so hopefully after a year of slushy food & continuous teeth brushing, I'll have, at least, a less crooked smile! (BTW, if you're going to the FQ Retreat I'll be the one trying to stitch with one hand over my mouth!!)
Anyway, in between all of this, I managed to complete a wee challenge the lovely Nova set me a while ago. She is hosting a Liberty Scrap Challenge with the Organic Stitch Company & there are some great tutorials & stitchy projects for you to try here. Anyway, Nova sent me 2 fat eighths of liberty loveliness from Jo's shop & I came up with this:
I showed you the pouch last week, but here it is again with my grandmothers dressmaking book in the background which gave me the original idea..
The fabric was so beautiful & soft.... so I made these notebooks with some of the leftovers
The wee labels were the ones I printed out last week with freezer paper & stamps...

They were so nice to make (although I was pretty dosed with painkillers at the time... so the stitching may not be the straightest!!), I even had enough wee snippets to do this applique card
If you get a free moment, do drop by the Liberty Scrap Challenge to see some of the other lovely Liberty projects that folk have come up with. I'm off to take some more tablets, but I'll be back tomorrow with a tutorial on how to make the pouch & the notelet
Look forward to seeing you tomorrow!
Take care

An Irish Road Trip {part five}: Galway Greetings!

Hello there!
I hope you have had a great week! Here on the North Coast we have been enjoying lovely spring sunshine & gorgeous early blossom
& vibrant spring colours
To-day as part of our road trip we are travelling the width of Ireland, from Belfast in the east to Galway in the west, to meet Ger and Eva from Pippablue.
They sell wonderfully quirky fabric & bits & pieces like these clothes plasters
or this gorgeous trim
You're very welcome ladies!
First of all, we'd like to thank Karen for inviting us to participate in her Irish Road Trip. For those of you who don't know us, we are two friends, Ger and Eva, who have a little studio shop in Galway City, called Pippablue. We like to sew, knit and crochet, and as well as selling lovely fabrics, yarns and crafty supplies, we offer classes and workshops in our new studio premises.
Everybody knows that we do enjoy a cup of tea, here in Ireland, or as you'd say in Irish a "cupán tae", so in the spirit of this Irish tradition we made a tea cosy using some lovely Melody Miller fabric and some machine embroidery. We love Japanese fabrics here at Pippablue, and the teacup print from the Ruby Star Rising collection was just perfect for this project!
We chose a plain Klona Cotton in jade green for the body of the teacosy ( ad to be green, of course!).  This fabric is a fab quality, and really easy to sew with, and embroider on!  The lining for the cozy is a fun, red polkadot cotton poplin... (these are my go to fabrics for linings and binding, they go with everything and they are a easy on the wallet!) We then ironed some BondaWeb on the wrong side of the teacup fabric. This makes the fabric feel almost like paper and it becomes really easy to cut the tea cup and teapot shapes neatly and close to the edge! You can then peel the paper off your shapes and position them where you like on your plain fabric for the cozy. When you are happy with the placement press them with your iron, and they will stay put for you to embroider on.
Then you can use your sewing machine like a pencil and sew around your shapes, and even add in some shading around the edges. This works best if you use a darning or embroidery foot on your machine, and it is easier than it looks! Another trick is to stretch your fabric in an embroidery hoop before you start sewing, this will keep the fabric taut and make it easier to move while embroidering
The stitching doesn't have to be perfect and if you go around each shape a few times, it creates a sketchy, hand drawn look.  If your feeling brave, why not try stitching in a few words... as Mrs. Doyle would say " Go on, Go on, Go on.." give it a try! If you are looking for a tutorial for a basic Tea cozy there are loads of really good ones on the internet, we used this one at Homemade Holiday Gifts to get our basic pattern!

That's all for now. We hope you enjoyed this mini-tutorial, and if you are ever in Galway, please stop by for a visit!

Thanks so much Eva & Ger!
I hope you have all enjoyed your visit to Galway... do drop back in a day or two for our final installment of the Irish Road Trip & the great giveaway news!!
In the meantime, have a wonderful weekend, & if you live in the UK, don't forget about the clocks!!
Take care

Creative Christmas Tea Wallet Fun

Hello there!
It is another beautiful, sunny crisp Autumn day on the Causeway Coast...the frost was sparkling this morning & everything was still as I walked over the frosty grass....
and took a photo of this tree which seemed to be lit up in the early morning sunshine
Inside the house, chaos reigned as per usual!! But rather than dwell on the frantic goings-on in our home as we prepare for Thailand, I thought I'd introduce the next Creative Christmas project....
These tea wallets are great fun to make & highly addictive (as Judith recently discovered!)
I made the one on the left a couple of years ago as a mothers day present for my lovely mummy who doesn't drink regular tea. Then I made these a couple of weeks ago for Judith & Sarah
They are a quick & fun way to make a lovely gift for someone...

For this one I used some antique lace & an ancient snap fastener (costing 2D according to the packaging!)

For these I added some fun applique
If you would like to make one I've added a tutorial to the Creative Christmas page
Thanks for stopping by & I hope you all have a wonderfully creative day!

All things bright & beautiful....

Hello there!
How was your day? It was a beautiful day here on the Causeway Coast. I woke up to a crisp Autumn sunshine with the early morning mist still hovering over the grass... this is the view from our bedroom at about 8am....
As I write this, I can see the moon rising in a star-studded sky...not a cloud in the sky...so hopefully we'll have another lovely day tomorrow.
Before I go I thought I'd share with you some photos of some curved pouches I've been experimenting with for my pretty {little} pouch swap partner....
I designed the pattern myself with curved & straight bottoms (that sounds quite rude, sorry) & I'm really hoping my partner will like one of them, but now I'm wondering which one?
Singing in the rain?

Or flower power?
They are both made of linen & are the same size.
I'd love for you help me out here please & tell me if you were my partner, which one would you prefer? I'll await your suggestions (nervously!)...
Thanks for stopping by
